Silver Leaf
Many manufacturers utilise the production of silver
leaf to "strike" new forms, in which gold leaf is to be manufactured
later. While doing so the "dust" of the prepared forms is mixed into the
silver, and thus reveals a matt, almost dull grey surface. Because we
manufacture silver leaf in the same extravagant process and under
application of the same forms as for gold leaf, our silver leaf
possesses a very lustrous, smooth finish and as a result, even
unpolished it reveals a very beautiful surface lustre, which can still
be considerably intensified through polishing. In addition, it more
flexible than machine-struck silver leaf.
However, oxidation must be taken into consideration with silver leaf. If
silver leaf is exposed unprotected to surrounding air, a dark to black
oxidation layer is created after awhile. If this effect is desired, it
can be accelerated with the help of sulphurliver (potassium
polysulphide). If you want to prevent oxidation, you need to coat the
silver leaf with a protective lacquer. For the interior shellac is well
suited for this.
